Determined to embolden Black and queer experiences through vulnerability and love, Imanigold is Americana for 2018’s America. The band and organizing collective is big sister April, little sister Dominique, and soul sister Hillary. Based in Harlem, they seek to create spaces for marginalized people to gain strength, share their experiences, and heal. Though Imanigold’s sonic elements place them squarely in the indie-pop genre, April, Dominique, and Hillary’s influences—ranging from Johnny Cash to Nina Simone to Disney’s Broadway-inspired soundtracks—consistently shine through.
Centered around her 42,000 Instagram followers, April has built and nourished a fiercely loyal community—in their music and online, Imanigold is grassroots organizing in its purest sense. The collective's live events in New York and Philadelphia offer safe spaces for trans, queer, and disabled people of color to come together and heal. Alongside producing visual art and music, Imanigold maintains a digital library of social justice resources, and a Revolution Fund to offer financial support to anyone in the community who may need it.
April’s is a fierce new voice, honed over decades of music making and fighting for social justice. A queer, Black child from Texas whose parents met in a Motown band, she grew up respecting the authority figures of Aretha Franklin and James Baldwin. Childhood is never far away in the world of Imanigold: "My music tells the stories of my own growing up, the beautiful moments and the moments that are beautiful because they were so painful,” April explains.
After releasing their first single “Ride On” in October 2017, the group launched a fundraiser to build Imanigold Studios, a sliding-scale recording space in Harlem. In seven days, they raised over $4,000, double their goal. With the studio now built, they are self-producing a collection of stripped down versions of their indie-pop compositions. With their clear vision and proven social impact, if anyone can truly “make America great,” it’s Imanigold.
